For rats 1/2" hardware cloth is fine. I prefer 1/3" or 3/8" but that's very hard to find and needs to be ordered in bulk. Really only necessary if you want to breed mice and rats in the same rack.



An indentation is not needed. Simply use a pan that is the correct height so the rats can stand up and eat the food.



I've heard those black concrete mixing tubs are perfect.
