SIlly question,why does my snake hiss?

I've had my adult ball for 2 weeks now and occasionaly when I hold her she hisses,sometime its really loud,sometimes it very quiet and whispery.My daugher was holding the snake last night when she hissed and it kinda scared her,she thought the snake was going to bite.I remember my last ball (over 10 years ago) also made hissing noise,why do they do it?
