Its been my experience that balls hiss when they really want to be left alone or to intimidate whatever is bothering them. I believe it's recommended (as a taming method) not to put them down when they hiss, otherwise they learn that hissing will get them what they want and will continue to hiss. It's unlikely that a ball would strike if the hiss doesn't work. There's probably other reasons why they hiss too, but this is what I've heard. If you have a baby, it might just have been stressed or scared. ----- Tosha
