four feet is a little overkill. I kept mine in a 8x3 and he used it all. He was more active than what i've heard from other burm owners. It will all depend on how you want to handle your burm and the cleaning chores. I foound it was easy for me to climb in and clean rather than reach. Mine was also very tall which didn't need to be. So if tall is where you're going than go deep if not go thin. Again it all depends on how you are going to handle the every day stuff.
