Keeping a newt together with ghost shrimp and plants sounds great. You might want to make the water deeper. The "spit" is probably excess protein in the water. Be sure to keep all uneaten food cleaned up right away (unless its live food). Also, having something to agitate the water surface (an airstone or filter outflow) may help get rid of it.

>>I have 1 C. Orientalis, 3 Ghost shrimp and some live Bacopa plants in my set-up. 3 inches of water, 1 inch of gravel, Whisper filter, and 3 rocks to my newt to climb on. I've noticed around the plants and some of the walls of my tank that there is some white stuff. It looks like spit and when I move the water around it, it disappears. Does anyone know what this is? I'm thinking that my set-up is just unbalanced and it's just a natural reaction from the plants. any info would be obliged.
