That's why I prefer newspaper. Ingesting small pieces probably won't hurt, however, big splinters can cause all kinds of problems (even death). Plus, the smaller pieces can get caught in the gumline of the mouth causing infection and I have treated many burms whose owners kept them on various types of wood shavings. Some burms are also prone to resp. ailments from the dust they inhale caused by the shavings. Personally, I would ditch the shavings and go with paper. But, if you insist on shavings, I would just cover the top layer with newspaper and feed the snake on top and once h/she's done, take the paper off. Hope this helps. Rob Carmichael
