i would wager that with time, a gecko will learn to recognize your scent (from handling). they can definitely recognize each other in terms of known/unknown, mate/potential mate, and rival (if males), and i'd guess it's by scent as well.
i had some particulary unsocialized animals, and i added a little piece of cloth i had worn on my person a few times into their main hides. after that, they were distinctly less bite-y when being handled. ----- marla
