Actually, the idea is to use the dogs ability to scent the prey.
Not catch the snake. A well trained hound will find them, and can be trained to keeps it distance.
I have trained many a bird dog in my time to be "snakeproof".
The dog finds the snake, alerts the handler, and stays clear of the snake.
Hounds are a lot smaller than bears,lions, boar, etc.
But they still manage to find and pin their quarry.
Finding and containing a snake would be no different.
