the roaches themselves dont really smell. The big factor is the food. letting food rot in the cage stinks. Too much humidity will make things smell too especially if you use a substrate. If you clean the tub often, you wont have a problem.

Samller species like lobsters are ok if you are raising a lot of babies but you will need a lot to feed juvies and adults since they are not much bigger than crix. I like blaberus the best. Many different types of roaches have wings but that does not mean they "fly". Most often wings are used to flutter if they fall.
