I'd say I'm pretty experienced with reptiles. I've kept my bearded dragon for over two years (not too long, but you know, it's easy to accumulate knowledge when you have a great interest in it). I also keep a mali uromastyx and a leopard gecko.
With dirt you have to add water to it every now and then (not all over though, in a corner or two). You have to guage the amount of water you put in so it doesn't raise the overall tank humidity. Just enough so that it doesn't turn into dust, you know? The wood chips...I don't like them anyways so when I get new dirt (hopefully this weekend), I'm not going to put them in again. I just mixed them in because I didn't have enough dirt. They are red cypress, so they're safe in the respect of toxicity. Not really in the respect of digestibility, but that's why I'm not going to keep them long.
