I paid a couple of kids in Trinidad to chase Mattes (tegus) into their burrows with their dogs were we dug up the three foot holes for the like sized inhabitants. The dogs were not very successful as the trailes were criss crossed and the dogs, many times , lost the main trail while chasing the lizard. Of course, lizards are more mobile than snakes, and this may not be as much of a problem when scenting for them. Obviously, arboraeal snakes are out of the question.
I also heard tell of a scientist who collected many a snake with his Merlin Falcon. The bird could locate snakes in the most impossible vegetation from great distances.
