It sure does look like the pic has been 'doctored'. The only thing you appear to have in your favor is that your gamble paid off.
Of course you can buy imported chondros...and have them live. People do it all the time. But it comes with a risk, because for every one like yourself, who manage to keep one alive there are any number of people that end up burying theirs in their back yards.
Most of the time (these days) it's not a chondro being an import that ends up killing it, it's usually the way it's kept and transported prior to it being sold (in my opinion).
Here's a pic of a chondro that has not been 'doctored'. The chondro is not an import. It is a very nice, healthy, chondro that was born here in Pennsylvania. While it cost more than the $250.00 you paid for yours, the person who sold me this guy is not a crook, so in no way was I ripped off by buying it.
