Sounds as though your guy may have incurred repetitive ecdysis, where they go into the multiple times prior to shedding. This normally occurs with specimens which have incurred some form of dermal injury, or females, prior to depositing eggs.
Also, cool temperatures and dry air will contribute to such difficulties regarding ecdysis. Always try to increase the humidity, or at least add a humidity chamber to the enclosure, during ecdysis.
All in all, it sounds as though you handled the situation like a veteran, keep up teh great work...
