Sorry for your reproductive failure. It happens even in the best(that we know of) conditions.
There can be many many reasons for the failure and nesting is only one of them. If you choose to attempt reproduction, you will have to find out what the problems are.
About nesting, it seems, it is by far, best to have it set up(your best attempt) before the female breeds. After that, messing with it only makes it worse. Even with good nesting, for instance, if the moisture is off, adding late will not help.
