The common chromosome number among colubrids appears to be 36 with exceptions. The Trans Pecos Ratsnake (Elaphe subocularis) apparently has 40 chromosomes.

Kathy and Bill Love have a small book on cornsnakes that contains quite a bit of genetics. Do a Google for Kathy Love.
