We can't explain all of it. No, chams do NOT go brown with age, he's just a bit cold and probably not all that healthy. Chams can thrive, or they can simply persist. I'm sure there are other chams persisting in careless keepers' hands. But, persisting is not the same as thriving. This cham may not be showing its' true feisty personality because it doesn't have the energy. Chams as organisms can tolerate a lot of mistreatment, but if and when health problems do show up they won't have the reserves to fight very long. All this forum can do is give the advice that we know will result in healthy vibrant animals who do show their true color, personality, and activity. This is not an exact science. Heredity and sheer luck has something to do with it. Maybe it is lucky enough to get a good diet. Yes, maybe I could keep a cham like your friend does, but knowing what I do about their biology I wouldn't choose to let it live a borderline miserable life.
