1) Take your aspen bedding and place on a large cookie sheet or baking pan.
2) Set oven to 350 F and allow to preheat.
3) Place bedding in oven.
4) Check every 15 minutes until golden brown....I mean...
wait until it gets up to almost 350, be careful not to burn it.
5) allow to cool completely
6) you now have sterile aspen shavings without any chemicals, enjoy!
(however, all of this is unecessary, since mites do not live in the bedding for extened periods of time (after a week or two they will all be dessicated and dead). So the stuff you buy at the store is already mite free, unless you buy it at a pet store that has mites (PetBlow). Ticks on the other hand can hang around for quite awhile, but the chances of you getting snake ticks from a bag of aspen shavings is pretty slim. Anyway, I still do it...an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
