Thanks for the advice. ACtually I found it the same day. I tore apart the basement thinking it had cleverly crawled up into a box,into a chest drawer with clothes in it, a drain, the furnace (for warmth), you name it. Then, as an afterthought I moved several screens I had stacked against the wall and there he was. Actually, outside his cage I think the chill of the basement floor took the thrill of escape out of him and he was glad to get back to his warm and comfortable, if unexciting, life in captivity (sounds like me!). Thanks for the help.
