That is due to less inbreeding and that the original animals where known to get big so that is a trait that was looked for. That said the line of snows and amels that are sold by PetCo are managed well and despite being a farmed reptile that is breed for numbers they are supriseingly healthy. Get them young and you will get better animals. Are you can try talking to breeders (I think that is your best bet) and ask them if they are breeding any large animals this year. While this won't ensure you getting a bigger baby it will help. For instance talk to Kathy Love on a personal level on the phone and with her record keeping and knowledge of what her animals are capaple of produceing you can get the best results. You can contact any breeder I just say Kathy because I believe she talks to more of her customers than most breeders after the sale and that helps in knowing what your lines are produceing from year to year.
