About once a week or so (I've been know to let this go to 2 weeks), I take my tubs out into the back yard soak them in bleach/water solution, hose them off, let them dry/air out, replace substrate, add snake. Every couple of days I collect my waterbowls, soak them in bleach/water solution then run them through the dishwasher and put back in the tubs. In all, it takes about 10 minutes of work time, costs next to nothing and bleach kills everything! Hope this helps.
