Hi Sharon.
With garter snakes it should be fine. The convenience and selling point is the pre-measured size.
When I was ordering my roll the gentleman told me that he customers who kept retics on the cage liners.
Now, I've seen a few retics. When they go, they go. And you'll have a soggy mess in the cage unless you use multiple layers of DCL paper.
But if you can get your exact size and use it with garters, it should work well.

PS: Do an Internet search for Kraft paper. That comes in different thicknesses, I think. It would work just as well and is probably cheaper.
