undertank and night heat

What do the pros think? I'm an avid herper and I was wondering why there is such a big push to use night heat and ground heat? In the wild the sun heats the earth during the day then it cools at night right? So why should I give anything but warm daytime light to my reptiles? Is it all just a sales pitch; heat rocks and pads,night heat bulbs. Thanks
