They had 2 acres that were FULL of dirt mounds and holes...so they had alot of moles. There are some traps that you have to place within the mole/gopher tunnel system. All the mole/gopher has to do is walk through the trap and it sets the trap off. Soo, therefore the trap sits underground and wont harm your pets. The only thing you need (besides the trap that is) is a shovel to get access to the tunnel and even to be safer you can put a bucket over the dug up area so the dogs don't get too curious. Good luck!
