While most pet owners start out this way, it is not really recommended.

If I were you, I would make a nice tropical setup for amphibians and/or geckos. I've been wanting to work with poison dart frogs for a while now...
Of course you would need to play with humidity if keeping that screen cover.

If you know you have the space, time, money and wherewithall to get a good cage soon, then it shouldn't be a problem if you maintain it right.
