Odd... Is the rat warmed up, not just to room temps, but to live mammal temps? That could help.
Also braining the f/t rat might be helpful. kinda icky, but from what you describe, if it's a successful stimulus, it might actually be more convenient than repeated offering.
Hope you get a solution. I'm grateful my little Sophia is so enthusiastic about food. Except for the time she mistook my unscented hand for a mouse...
