Walking Beardies

We take our Beardies for a walk, but always hold them. We just moved to an neighborhood where there's a large open area, with a dirt path. One of our girls was dying to get down. Besides the obvious (needing a leash and watching for birds, etc) is there any health reasons why we shouldn't let them down on the dirt? I worry about parasites, but not sure if that's a concern there.
