I honestly think they have just been priced higher than market value. I almost picked up a pair for Lasik directly about 1.5 yrs ago. For $800 shipped, that was when the market had them around $1250 a pair. They really are no more spectacular than other carpets, they are not very rare. They seem to breed well, have great disposition. I just think they have finally fallen to appropriate prices.
