I also bought some peatmoss, I just mixed it with playsand and topsoil. My box turtles, skink and tartantula use it.
For my monitors, I use dirt.
Peatmoss tends to dry out too fast for my taste.
It is your lizard, do as you will. I just had a load of pea gravel dumped in my driveway.
I already paid for it and I will use it for what it is intended for. I will pay more money for the proper substrate for the animals I keep. After all, I pay a whole $6 a ton for dirt if I haul it myself.
