Take for example our rat facility (converted garage) and our rabbit colonies,..... We run over 600 breeder female rats at a 10 to 1 ratio (female to male),.. broken into six seperate breeding tanks each containing roughly 100 females to 10 males. In addition to this, we are raising many hundreds of "Waver Rats" as I call them, for future snake food. I pull "pregos" as I call them, every Thursday and Sunday. I usually pull between 90 and 100 on any good day. I situate these in the "Prego Tank" and place only the "Poppers" into the maternity rack. The Poppers are the HUGE females that will birth within 24 hours. Now,... one might think that caring for a couple thousand rats (conservative figure) would be a big task. But due to the systems that I personally designed and built, it may take 20 minutes to pull and situate the pregos. Another 20 to 30 minutes to change shavings in the maternity rack every few days, but my wife usually does that. But all of the systems are built with the means to hold a month's supply of food in large reservoirs designed to deliver the food via gravity flow. And in addition to this they are all on auto-water valve systems. So there is SO little maintainence it is laughable. It's even enjoyable at times. The rabbit colonies are very similar but do need to have their food trays topped every week or so. But they are all on auto-water systems as well. So you see, this requires very little time to maintain and leaves time for other things. "Running through snakes" each day takes maybe 40 to 50 minutes. My wife will begin on one end of the room with one trash can and I begin on the other and we meet in the middle. But all in all,. it's all very easy. I'm surprised more people don't do it.
