Luna's first summer I did it that way. I had a nice branch she would get on and I would walk around the property. I would also put her in appropriate size trees - well, small trees. We have some dwarf apple and a young crabapple and a couple others that I'd put her own, but none where I could not reach the highest or deepest branch. If you put him on a tree with fruit, make sure it is safe in case he eats it. If unsure then don't risk it.
all that said, if he is not happy being on your arm or a branch then it's time to get that cage set up
and remember - don't turn your back, even for a second. I knwo I keep saying that but we don't want to hear another bird snatching story!
