Many chameleons will roam around the cage floor from time to time.
Every time I see a female that is old enough to lay eggs doing it,
it makes me wonder if she's looking for a spot to lay them.
All of my egglaying females have been provided with a place to
dig once they are close to sexual maturity. Its IMPORTANT that
they have a place to lay eggs in, even infertile ones so that
they won't become eggbound. So that a large part of the cage is
not taken up with a container, I use a container
big enough that the chameleon can fit into it when its empty with
a little room to spare. I fill the container with washed playsand
about 2 thirds full...and when she starts to dig with intent, I
move the female to a 65 litre rubbermaid type container or a
trash can that has been modified for egglaying.
I never breed my female panther chameleons until they are over
one year of age. I want to be sure that they are done growing
their own bones before they start laying fertile eggs. They may
lay infertile eggs before that time but it should be easier on
them than laying fertile ones IMHO.
Hope this helps!
