Exposing the hemipenes through the use of slight upward pressure on the tail base is known as "popping". If hemipenes appear, it is a male, if not it is a female. The younger the snake, the easier it will be. I've never heard that you must wait for a shed to sex a snake using this method. However, popping is a very delicate procedure and should only be done by someone with some experience. If done incorrectly, you risk seriously injuring the snake. Those are nice looking corns.
