Well it is Monday now, the weekend is over and I hope we are in more of a clearing now that a few days have passed on the new litter.

If you were not around Thursady - Southernboids finally had babies, A Split litter of Snow and Sunglows!!!

We were and are very excited. We had 20 babies, 1 was a Snow and 2 were Sunglows with a few Albinos, Hypos, Anerys etc.

We lost the two Sunglows - this was a HUGE shock! Out of all the animals, 17 looked great and active while the snows and sunglows appeard to be a tad under done if you will and slow moving.

We kept them seperated, warm and misted etc.. all are shedding the cords as planned and doing great, except the two Sunglows. We lost the fist sunglow on Friday - less that 24 hours after birth. We lost the second Sunglow on Saturday morning. Just a few days after birth. The snow is still with us, moving slower then the others but alive.

Oddly enough the other 17 babies are running around like crazy with a ton of energy and appear to be doing excellent.

We have spoke with many about the Sunglows and what could have happened...

As for our setups I do believe we were not perfect but not too far off so we have eliminated that as the cause.

Really we are at a loss on why just those three are the slower starters... but we have our fingers crossed for the Snow.

We still have an amazing litter - just minus the sunglows. That hurts but I can not punish the rest of the litter for that.

On the Bright side I believe the following to be true:

We did prove out Both males as well as the female, we Definetly have 1.1 DH Snow and 0.1 DH Sunglow. That is nice to have PROVEN on them.

I also believe Southernboids to be one of the few who have had a proven split litter. I know it has been done before, but not really common yet, so for that we are happy.

I also believe Southernboids to BE THE FIRST to produce both Snows and Sunglows in the same litter,, has there been others? Are we the first that you know if with Snow and Sunglow in the same litter? We lost our Sunglows.. but it would nice to have the litter be remembered for more than that.

We still have a bunch of beautiful healthy babies consisting of Snow, Albinos, Anerys, Hypos, Normals etc.. most all Possible Triple Hets. I know the possible triple hets exist already, so that is not really gound breaking, but again not many Poss Trip Hets exist either, so that is still a plus.

I have also learned a LOT this weekend from the many emails and phone calls from breeders trying to help me. I will not put down all of the names here.., and they know who they are. But I would like to thank them again for taking the time to email us as well as taking their personal time and calling me on a Sunday. If you ever think the Boa game is about individuals and you are all alone, you will find that with a few emails describing your problem may generate more info than you think.

One other thing I found out that was good news to us, is that a lotion for helping Boas with dry skin exists. Did you know that? I didnt.. it is called Richs Reptile Lotion and is availalbe from Salmonboa.net. I hear it works on dry skins as well as bad sheds. I will put this to the test when I get it. New product to me, but trusted breeders have told me they use it and it works great.

I think that is all from here. We are checking the temps on the babies often, misting etc. Thanks to all that replied to my panic emails and posts here on KS as well. It is a horrible feeling to be so excited one minute and then have one or more pass on you. We are doing our best to move forward with the remaining ones and not spend too much time thinking about what could have been.

Thanks

Shawn Morelan
