That is "normal" behavior, well, more so for some species than others- if you go to the Asian Rats section and look at Blue Beauties you will see them "zig-zagging" quite a lot-

But in any case- it's a defensive display, indicating tension, I don't know if it helps them strike further or flee faster, but it means the snake is tense for some reason...no harm, it is voluntary on their part...
