Sand (if it is fine grain washed, screen play sand and not large grains or any "edible" reptile sand) is better than alrge wood chips, but is still unsafe. It should only be used with discresion(sp?) and definately only on beardies over 1 year of age. For hatchlings an juvies you can try using newspaper, paper towels, reptile carpet, tile, lineolium, non-stick shelf liner, or any other non particle substrate.
