You can't just throw the food in the tank. You need to place the snake and the food in a small container. There can be no doubt that the snake will be in contact with the food item.

If it is just "in the tank" there is a very good possibility the snake will not venture form its hiding spot to locate the food.

In a small dish there is no doubt. A small deli dish or gladware container works well.
