I wonder if the scales are to focus the input to the sensors at the bottom so that they can best pick up on the direction by comparing the heat sensed at the bottom of adjacent and slightly differently aimed pits. I also wonder if they mainly rely on heat pits when feeding in total darkness at the bottom of a hole and perhaps some of the more modern snakes that don't have them tend not to feed this way as much. | ||
