Potting soil

I am going to buy plants tomorrow, and I was wondering when I change the soil can I put regular potting soil in it (with those white things?) Because I wasn't sure if those white things in potting soil are poisonous or not. Thanks. If I shouldn't use that soil could you recommend another.
