Also females do hold onto their eggs for months at a time so it is very possible. Unfortunately the morality rate of these guys seems high (either from stress or parasites other issues). If there is ample hideing places and alot of foilage then there is no reason to separate the 2. If you do notice agression form, or the female does become more stresses you might want to consider separateing the male. And your male is just doing what comes naturally to him.
