According to everything I've ever read UV light is unnecessary for boas unlike many other reptiles that require it to metabolize calcium for bones, etc. I have often wondered, however, if there could be a hidden benefit from UV rays killing off microorganisms such as bacteria, virus, fungi within the enclosure. For this purpose it certainly wouldn't hurt. I'm unsure if extensive exposure to UV rays can cause eye damage to a snake. It's not like they can close their eyes or are intelligent enough to avoid it. I'd like to think my animals are healthier when I take them outside on a sunny day but this is probably a result of increased exersize and stimulation.
