Back when I started, almost 15 years ago, a breeder told me the prey should be no longer than the length of the BDs head and it should fit between their eyes. I have had this discussion with several breeders and with people in the know and most say for safety it should be length not width. So I am in the minority. I keep my temps for babies on the high side (around 115) when indoors and I give them the ability to hang vertically. I have never had a problem with crix or roaches. In fact, this year all my babies are being raised 100% outdoors. I have several 7 week old BDs over 10" pushing 50 grams. they get roaches every day that would never pass the test of fitting lengthwise between their eyes. I am the first to offer advice that a novice will be safe with rather than take a risk. If the temps are right and the basking spot is set up right there should not be a problem. The biggest problem I have seen is when people feed mealies and supers. [ Hide Replies ]
