Halogen Spot Lamp

I have a ball python and use a 100W Zoo Med basking spot lamp. The bulbs burn up about every other month, and at $10 a pop, this becomes rather expensive. I was wondering if there is anything wrong with using a typical hardware store halogen spot lamp.
