D.m.erebennus is most often now considered a subspecies of melanurus, a far northern melanistic geographic variant of the widespread tropical/subtropical cribos. E. Indigos are being considered a separate species due to their geographic isolation, plus the labial and other minor scalation differences. This change in thinking began with an article by Joseph Collins that actually had no data or evidence for making the suggestion (it had been suggested more tentatively much earlier), but it has stuck and more recent research supports it.
