I kept one back in the late 80's and it was a nice little snake. One of the things that makes them non-garter snake like is that they're egg layers from what I recall. They're all pretty much wild caught (unless someone's started breeding them) so they do tend to have a parasite load. That's what I feel eventually caused the death of my snake (after about a year) so I'd recommend taking a fecal sample to the vet at minimum, to see what they find.
