My ball won't eat f/t, nor will he eat rats... he'll only eat mice, and he's a full grown adult now (I've tried everything to get him to eat other things, just won't happen, I've resigned myself to that.) So, he gets several live mice a week, and I've never had an issue yet. I always watch just to be sure, but he usually takes them the second they hit the ground of his tank, and I've never had to remove any of them.
Of course, it's no guarentee, but I thought I'd share.
