Please, Please, Please, Please just change the paper towels.
At least once a week pull the old ones out and put new ones in.
Because of temperature and humidity your entire enclosure is a perfect place to breed bacteria. Using paper towels is a shortcut to help you extend the amount of time between enclosure cleanings. Leaving the paper towels in there as long as you have is simply undo-ing your shortcut. You are now contributing to the bacteria farm, and shortening the time between necessary enclosure cleanings.
Sacrafice the time and expense to keep fresh paper towels in your enclosure... Please, Please, Please, Please, Please! ----- Joe
