Hunting for Snappers

Anyone got any idea's about how to catch some snappers i live in Louisiana there are alligators everywhere and it scares the crap outa me because everytime people say i wont get bit but when i go down to the lake i see one everytime anyone got any ideas i have never seen a snapper by the shore or anything either if you know how to make a trap or anything email me thanks
