First of all, with the home insurance, avoid AMA! They are definately afraid of snakes, and because I was flatly declined insurance I did a small research paper for my local herp society on insurance.
What I found was that about half of the company's will insure your home, and about half of these will do so at no extra cost. Obviously something to consider though is that if a heating pad causes a fire, and is obviously not intended for 24/7 usage, you may be screwed. Another reason to use herp products. I personally use Peace Hills insurance because they do my car as well (I'm in western canada), and are rather cheap.
I can't speak for all insurance companies, but if you have AMA insurance, (they don't know you have snakes of course)and you have a claim that reveals your herps, they will honor the claim and then end your insurance.
For insuring the actual snakes, they are just like any other collection and need to be proffesionally appraised before they can be insured.
