Yes, a quick run of the steam cleaner wand across your plastic tubs and enclosures should be safe, as you do not need to steam the surface for an extended period of time to disinfect it, just a few quick sweeps over and a few seconds are all that is needed.
I spray my HDPE enclosures down with 2% Chlorhexidine solution, allow it to sit for a few minutes, run the steamer across the interior and exterior enclosure surfaces for a few seconds, wipe with a clean dry cloth and have not encountered any problems for the past ten years.
While Cryptosporidium serpentes can devastate a collection, it is actually quite rare to encounter such at epidemic levels and steam is one of the most effective methods of eradicating the pathogen…
