If it actually popped, then it's a male, as the popping exposes the hemipenes. (in boas! I'm not even going into the blood python mess! lol)

Usually the males spurs are longer, taper more and have more of a point or a curving point. Females, if you can see them at all, tend to be more blunt and sqat. I don't go by the tail shape, as I said at the start, this boa has the classic female tail shape, short blunt tail, usually males have longer thinner tails. The only real accurate way is probing. I believe the breeder I got this snake from just did visuals based on the tail shape, length which obviously was not accurate in my case.
